Crystal Clear. Understanding Sun Protection.

The sun finally has it’s hat on so (for the most part), which means sun cream all round! BuCrystal Clear. Understanding Sun Protection.t all the different terminology used can be confusing, UV, UVR, UVC, SPF, UVA, what?? So we thought we’d put together a quick guide on what you should be using to protect your skin from the suns damaging rays this summer.

UV and UVR – Ultraviolet and Ultraviolet Radiation

UV are invisible rays of energy that are contained in sunlight. These rays contain UVR. UVR is a powerful thing that can even go through the ozone layer and trigger different physical effects, such as increasing the risk of skin cancer.

There are 4 different types of UV rays – A, B and C.

UVA can go deeper into the dermis (that’s the deeper layer of skin), which produces an immediate tan. Sounds great when you’re on holiday and want to come back with a lovely golden glow? But long term there are the ones which cause premature skin aging, pigmentation and wrinkles.

UVB are shorter rays, which make them sound less harmful, but they are much stronger. They can go through the epidermis (outer layer of skin) and are whilst they are responsible for a delayed tan, they’re also so bad for our skin, that they are responsible for sunburn and most skin cancers.

Thankfully, the ozone layer absorbs about 5% of these rays.

UVC. You don’t actually get exposed to these as the o-zone layer kindly filters these out for us! (It pays to look after the environment!).

How do we Protect our Skin from these Rays?

Time it Wisely

Avoid the sun altogether when it’s at its hottest, between 11am and 3pm each day. Use this time to take a siesta, find some shade or head indoors for a break and to cool off for a while. Being out in the sun during these times is when the most damage to skin will occur as this is when the sun’s rays are strongest.
