Everyone talks about skincare routine, what the best one is for your particular skin type and how, after years of searching, they’ve finally found ‘the one’ or, a few, products that are their perfect match.

But, the truth is, it’s very important to change your skincare routine at least once or twice a year, seasonally ideally, or your skin becomes used to the products and ingredients so they begin to lose their effectiveness.

There are many technical and scientific ways this can be explained, you can use a graph with an ‘impact curve’ if you really like but, in essence it’s in the same bracket as the ‘not feeling the benefit’ outside if you wear your coat too much indoors.

It turns out you can have too much of a good thing. If you think about it, this makes sense. If you keep using the same product over and over again, the level of benefit you see from it will reduce over time.

Having said that, you should note – it’s fine to come back to tried and tested favourites after a short break – and remember to change your routine only a few times a year. Don’t worry, you don’t have to lose your greatest discoveries forever.

When to Change

So when to change routine then? Think about the fact that your lifestyle will change throughout the year. And when your lifestyle changes, so to does the way your skin reacts and what it needs to see it right.

It might be that you spend a lot of time flying at certain points of the year rather than others.

Everyone knows the winter change and central heating makes such a difference. In the colder seasons it’s important to change to moisturisers offering a little more protection and creamy cleansers tend to work best in the colder seasons. Our Intense Anti Ageing Serum and Wipe Away The Years  are popular products fitting this bill.

But as the seasons begin to warm up through March and April something a bit lighter to brighten the skin, with added SPF, will be your friend alongside a cleansing wash. Soothing Cleansing Gel, our Brightening Complex, and Illuminate are what we all use, and we know our clients love.

External factors like travel, weather and sleep – often based around children or busy working patterns at certain times of year depending on the industry you work in – and exercise (if you play outdoor sports at certain times of the year but switch to indoor activities in the off-season) are all worth thinking about.

Your Individual Stage of Ageing

Not forgetting the most important internal factor though – your own ageing process. Nobody likes to think about getting older, talk about getting older or look too closely at the every day signs of ageing we all obsess about in the mirror. But we are all ageing – and this occurs naturally for all of us. The trick is not to avoid it, stress about it or worry about it – rather to adapt your skincare routine to it.

For you lucky younger readers, accentuating the wonderful tone and definition you already have will be what you’re thinking about and that’s why we invented Contour IT. You’ll be amazed if you watch the video (click on the banner below).

Whilst for other readers, firming and bringing back some of the definition you’re losing around your neck and décolletage may be your obsession right now. You should check out the video of Rewind 10 (click on the banner below).

Very similar looking products but adapting to exactly what is needed by individual skincare types and ages with different ingredients and techniques.

Soak it all Up

We are extremely lucky in this day and age that, as well as an abundance of products and skincare tools available to us, the internet makes learning about what might work for us, and seeing products and treatments reviewed in videos, so accessible.

So, take the time to learn about your own skin type. What will work best for you (at your age and ageing process) and also, how – even when you’ve got that sussed – you still need to change it up a bit through the seasons.

Some of you will be better at this than others. Such is life. Don’t worry if this makes some sense but you don’t have all the answers. That’s what we’re here for.
