This week’s guest blog post is written by one of the outnumbered men here at Crystal Clear!
Over the past few years, there have been many changes to the modern male. We’ve all seen man buns (your author holds his hands up!), large beards, rise in expert beer tasters, a cult following of crossfit enthusiasts and the fashionable undeclared ‘cheeky’ love for a certain piri-piri chicken outlet!
Admittedly, some of those modern trends will probably come and go, but one area that has thankfully come to light is the importance of looking after your skin.
Wind the clock back right back to the 1990s. Did your average male openly talk to their friends about skincare? Probably not, but you can guarantee that they were just as conscious about their skin as their female counterparts! I hated my acne as a teen and I was always looking for a magical cream that would zap away my spots and give me perfect skin. And I doubt I was alone!
Fast forward a few years, and it’s refreshing to see that attitudes have changed. After all, who doesn’t want to look their best and feel like they’re treating themselves? But many guys still resort to pinching their partner’s skincare, estimated to cost £230 a year! Gentlemen, it’s time to start buying your own!
So where do you start? You’ll notice that there is vastly different skincare for men and women. But surely our skin is the same? Not exactly. Male skin tends to be hairer, thicker and is sadly prone to being oilier. This is because our skin contains more sebaceous glands. But besides from these physiological differences, skin is skin! Everyone is different, some men may have shinier skin than others, some suffer from dry patches, and we all have break outs now and again, as do women – we’re all unique!
I suffer with shiny skin and I’ve been using No Shine Serum to help tackle this. And you know what? It has really helped to stop my skin from shining (as the name suggests). You may also notice that this brilliant serum comes in a very gender neutral black and white box, and white bottle. Nothing frilly, girly, sparkly or flowery, so I’m not embarrassed to have it on show in the bathroom.
I’ve also been incorporating Skin Repair into my daily routine. In fact, I’ve been using it in a pretty unconventional manner… as a hand cream. But why?
Skin Repair is brilliant at tackling dry skin! It’s designed as an anti-ageing moisturiser, but since using it, my hands feels smooth and hydrated. I may only be in my mid-twenties, but the anti-ageing properties seem to be working brilliantly too. It contains a fancy but effective blend of Vitamin E, Peptides and Alistin. I always keep a bottle on my desk now!
On the (very few) occassions that I do a full shave, I started swapping my popular brand shaving gel for our very own Soothing Cleansing Gel. Unlike my previous branded shaving gel, it hasn’t left my skin feeling dry, tight and irritated. This was recommended to me by one of my fellow skincare enthusiasts here at Crystal Clear. There is one downside though – I’ve got no excuse not to be clean shaven!! I also use this as my daily cleanser and it leaves my skin grease free and feeling refreshed.
So, what have I learned? Skincare should be about your skin type – not your gender! Obviously there are great male skincare products out there – many of which I use daily. But don’t be hesitant to try gender neutral skincare products or beauty treatments.
